Setting old words to new melodies, re-working ancient ballads or writing their own - Salt House marry all their musical strands with a deep understanding for the British song tradition and an empathy for a story.  Their music is rooted in the traditional music of Scotland and its neighbours, drawing on influences from landscape and nature.

The band combines the vocal and songwriting talents of Jenny Sturgeon and Ewan MacPherson and is completed by the strings of Highland fiddler Lauren MacColl on fiddle and viola.  ‘A beautifully functioning unit’ (fRoots)

Their latest release ‘Undersong’ was produced by folk heavyweight Andy Bell (Songs of Separation, Jon Boden, The Furrow Collective) and  was recorded on the remote Hebridean island of Berneray. The British press approved  - ‘a gentle, lulling delight’ (The Guardian).  The band deliver and arrange their material with an honesty and respect for the tradition, whilst forging a sound that’s uniquely their own within the ever-progressive folk scene. Playlist-ed by fRoots as a 5-star album choice, and garnering a host of airplay including BBC 6 Music and Radio 2, ‘Undersong’ marks a real leap forward for Salt House.

Whilst Ewan brings over 20 years of experience playing with the likes of Malinky, Shooglenifty and Fribo, Jenny draws on her background as a biologist gifting an influential emphasis on the pull of the natural world to the band's material.  Lauren’s reputation for warmth of tone in her emotive playing and understanding of song has led her to work with a host of folk singers over the past decade. It is the sum of these parts and their wide-ranging outlook that makes  “wonderful music, that singles Salt House out as a trio of exceptional talent.” (Folk Radio UK)
